Objectives of the Curriculum

In order to achieve the aims of the school, a curriculum is provided which:

 

q  is broad and balanced and which develops the children's knowledge, skills and understanding through learning programmes and experiences appropriate to their learning abilities, irrespective of their gender, ethnic or social background or special educational needs;

 

q provides children under five with a wide range of educational experiences following the Foundation Stage guidelines including planned talk and play, develops their early knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes to provide a sound basis for later education and enables them to make an effective transition from home to school;

 

q  satisfies the requirements of the Locally agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, ensuring that sufficient time is allowed for all aspects of this basic curriculum;

 

q  provides continuity of coherent experiences, and progression within Key Stages, i.e. Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, between 1 and 2, and liaison with secondary schools (Key Stage 3);

 

q  offers challenge leading to the highest standards of personal achievement, taking account of ability and aptitude;

 

q  includes assessment of the progress and attainment of each pupil to determine whether learning objectives have been achieved and to decide on the next steps in learning;

 

q  includes recording of the progress and attainment of each pupil and reports this to parents and children (and regularly informs parents and the community about the achievements of schools);

 

q  prepares children for the responsibilities and opportunities that arise throughout life in a multi-cultural and technological society;

 

q  extends knowledge, analytical capability, imagination and understanding in ways which develop critical awareness of moral values, and capacity for enjoyment;

 

q  develops constructive attitudes and qualities through spiritual awareness and aesthetic appreciation, and fosters respect for the environment;

 

q  promotes equality of opportunity, and an understanding of and respect for the rights of others;

 

q  promotes the importance of healthy living and emphasises the value of personal relationships based on mutual respect;

 

q  works in partnership with the family, the business community and society at large, leading to an appreciation of the value of co-operative development.
