In English, every class follows the Literacy Strategy - this is a detailed framework for teaching literacy from Year 1 to Year 6.   Reception children have to be taught elements of the Strategy.    The same structure for the hour is used for all age groups from Year 1 to Year 6. The first fifteen minutes are spent reading or writing together as a class. A wide variety of different texts are used: stories, poems, information books, instructions, newspaper articles or advertising material.  The next 15 minutes are spent teaching a spelling rule or looking at sentence structure, grammar or punctuation. For the following 20 minutes, the children work independently, while the teacher works with different groups on areas of development. The hour ends with a 10-minute discussion, revision or celebration of work achieved.
